Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis of the hand is a significant problem due to pain, weakness and loss of hand function. Osteoarthritis occurs following the deterioration of cartilage within the joint, reducing the joint’s ability to move smoothly and freely. As osteoarthritis worsens, the joint cartilage can completely wear away, leaving ‘bone on bone’, which ultimately leads to fusion of the joint. Osteoarthritis can occur due to wear and tear, trauma or other problems that affects cartilage. The base of the thumb and the finger joints are especially prone to osteoarthritis.
